What is the Metaverse?
In a nutshell, a metaverse is a “virtual space. It is a three-dimensional world created on the Internet, and we enter the world through our alter egos, called avatars.
The point of the metaverse is that we can operate in a state that is as close to the real world as possible. We can move our avatars around, play with them, and hold meetings with them in a world where time is constantly flowing, just like in the real world.
Metaverse is derived from the words “Meta” meaning “transcendence” and “Universe” meaning “world,” and takes its name from the world of Neal Stephenson’s 1992 science fiction novel Snow Crash.
Metaverse is often considered a new concept, but its predecessor, the three-dimensional virtual space Second Life, was released in 2003 and became popular in Japan around 2006. Communication and trading among users in virtual spaces have already been seen in the 2000s.
